Iconic Men’s Hair {Prepare to Swoon}

November 15, 2012

Whilst having a think and a coffee after lunch today, I became fixated on men with iconic haircuts that work.  So often, men with a “signature” style end up looking gimmicky- it becomes a joke, a way for people to remember them.  If Russell Brand were to wash, cut, or at all change the style of his hair, would anyone recognize him?  No, and that’s because without his hair, no one would recognize him anymore.  He is his hair and, in my opinion, he uses it as a crutch.

No, the men I’m thinking of have a look that has evolved over the years but is still unmistakably theirs, like a male version of Anna Wintour’s famous bob or Daphne Guiness‘ blonde-and-black look.  With the trusty help of Google, I’ve compiled a (small) list of men who are stylistically associated with their hair.  As you can see, this list is far from complete so please feel free to chime in with your top contenders, too.

Conan O’Brien. See, you don’t even need to see the top of his hair because you already know what it looks like.  If his hair was transplanted onto any other head, you would know it’s his.  Even if it wasn’t his signature red, the style would be enough.  Though the height of his hair sometimes verges on the comical, we think he always looks sharp, well groomed, and interesting.  Also, he’s from Brookline, which means we love him a little bit extra.

Mr. Richard Gere.  Sometimes his hair is longer, sometimes it’s shorter, but it’s always unmistakably his.  His sweet curls and smiling eyes have found a home in many a woman’s heart and, correct me if I’m wrong, but he really did grey perfectly.

Patrick Dempsey.  Like the gentleman before him on this list, he has a wonderful curl and hair that I long to run my fingers through.  Can I get an amen?

Of course, there are so many more stylish gentleman with iconic heads of hair, but for now, these three will have to do.  Again, share your favorites with us in the comments.  We’d love to grow this list and help celebrate stylish men the world over!
