Runway Hair: Up & Back

September 19, 2012

Stock up on hair gel, ladies!  If the ss13 RTW runway shows are any indication (which they definitely are), we can look forward to slicked-back up looks on the horizon.  We were re-introduced to ladylike simplicity at the Altuzarra show, where neat chignons and a dramatic side part lent to a timelessly sophisticated collection.  At Gucci, we saw this same idea employed but this time with a little more drama and edge, as hair extensions were heavily gelled and placed to look like tiny samurai swords* poking through the top of wrapped buns.  Anna Sui playfully topped her models with brightly colored wigs which were then tied with the model’s real hair at the nape of the neck, and, at the Michael Kors show, the hair was neatly parted and then cleanly fastened at the nape of the neck with a wide band for a ever-so-chic finish.

If we have anything to say about the emerging hair trends (we do), we’d say the top-knot is out and sleek, dramatically parted and sophisticated up looks that are tied at the nape of the neck, are definitely back in.  All you’ll need is a little gel and a comb and you’ll be fashion forward in minutes.

To see more  backstage styling and runway looks from the spring shows, be sure to check in with Vogue!

*Likely this styling element was designed to look like exotic flowers, or something, but it certainly seemed samurai-esque to me and what is more fierce than the beauty and skill of a samurai?
