Clients We Love: Cathryn Griffith

June 4, 2011

For years, photographer Cathryn Griffith has been coming to Avanti to see Alex.  Upon each visit, we’ve been moved by her spirit, her optimism and kindness, and it is always a pleasure to welcome her through our doors.

Avanti Salon, Alex Iacobacci, Cathryn Griffith
Not only is she a hugely giving and motivated woman, she’s also overcome one of the most challenging illnesses a woman can ever experience: Breast Cancer, and came out of it with unparalleled grace.  Throughout her diagnosis, wig-cuts, and hair re-growth, Alex proudly stood by Cathryn’s side and supported her.  Having lost his mother to Breast Cancer, Alex has always been an enormous supporter of organizations that are focused on finding a cure and supporting women struggling with the illness.   Today,  Alex is proud to stand beside Cathryn, a Breast Cancer survivor with one of the most gorgeous heads of silver hair we’ve ever seen!

Last year, Cathryn published a book called Havana Revisited: An Architectural Heritage, which is a lovely book juxtaposing the Havana of 1900-1930, as depicted by illustrated postcards, with the modern-day Havana, which Griffith has been digitally photographing since her first trip to the city in 2003.  The side-by-side comparisons between antique illustrations and modern-day photos, allow the reader to time-travel to a forbidden city, rich with culture and beauty.

The book is more than just a picture book, and Griffith sat down with architects, scholars, historians, urban planners and preservationists to depict the rich fabric of Cuban culture and explore the nuances and history of her geographic and architectural subjects.

Cathryn has kindly donated 20 signed copies of Havana Revisited to Avanti’s Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure fund.  We will be selling them in the salon for $40, and all the proceeds will go toward helping to find a cure for Breast Cancer and supporting women through one of the most challenging times of their lives.  And we all agree, this book will look stunning on your coffee table!

Cathryn will also be a guest of honor at our Fundraising Party on Wednesday, June 29th.  The party starts at 7:30, and we’re looking forward to seeing all of you there! (More information about our fundraising party will be announced soon!  We’re looking forward to hosting an inspiring and joyous event and look forward to seeing you there!)

Have a great weekend, xoxo!
